If you can’t be yourself at your CU, you can’t lead. It’s as simple as that. Leading is hard work. It can be exhausting. And you can’t do it well while you’re pretending to be someone else. So if you’re not comfortable in your own skin, you’re going to have a hard time leading people. That isn’t to say you might not do pretty well using carrots and sticks to get people to go along. But that’s not leading in my book.
- Do you show your feelings at work, or do you think that would be unprofessional?
- Do you cultivate a leadership persona? If so, consider how liberating it might be to step out from behind that mask.
- Do you find opportunities to get together with people in relaxed surroundings outside of work?
- What are some things you could try to be more of yourself in your role at work?
